In the first episode of our mini-series on »Artificial intelligence (AI) and statistics«, we examine whether AI is just »glorified statistics«. We explain the terms AI and machine learning using concrete examples and offer an interactive task in which listeners consider how an AI can recognize a rectangle on a checkered sheet of paper.
In our latest episode, we show how data clouds and algorithms are connected. But how does an algorithm recognize the difference between children and adults? What's the deal with random forests and decision trees? And why is the whole thing quite complex and more than just simple statistics? Listen for yourself!
Now it's up to you: Imagine a squared A4 sheet of paper with some boxes black and others white. This arrangement results in a pixelated black and white picture. Draw a simple rectangle and think about how you could explain the recognition of this rectangle to an AI. What rules or algorithms would be necessary to recognize the contours of the rectangle?
