News from the Dutch Schoonschip: Since January, the floating energy community of 30 houses has been connected to the energy and flexibility markets. The innovative solution from the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM for the real-time prognosis of consumption and local generation and price optimization enables the community to buy and sell electricity at the best possible prices on the day-ahead energy market. In addition, the 30 batteries are marketed by a trader on the imbalance market. This allows the community to further increase its flexibility and reduces energy costs for its members.

All companies want to produce as efficiently as possible, make optimum use of their machines and avoid wasting resources. A new project at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM in Kaiserslautern is researching how inline process and product monitoring can help companies achieve this. The Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Science and Health is funding the project.

Saving energy and using it sensibly – this goal runs through many projects at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM. In its projects, the institute is committed to making the generation, procurement and distribution of energy calculable. At E-world Energy and Water 2025 from February 11 to 13 in Essen, the institute will therefore be represented by three departments presenting their latest developments in the context of »energy«.

The United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ). They are thus honoring the 100th anniversary of the development of quantum mechanics. As a place of quantum research, we at Fraunhofer ITWM are participating in the anniversary year with educational programs and other events.

District heating networks are growing increasingly complex as a result of feeding in renewable energy and the trend toward decentralization. In the project »AD Net Heat«, Fraunhofer researchers are simulating heat flows throughout the entire network, predicting load peaks and helping to plan new grids.
