Scientific Exchange on Multi-Objective Optimization

At the Kaiserslautern site, the topic of »multi-objective optimization« is particularly strong in research and application. This is demonstrated, for example, by the research training group »Mathematics of Interdisciplinary Multiobjetive Optimizaton (MIMO)« at the RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau and the successful industrial projects of the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM in this area.

It was therefore natural to choose the Palatinate as the venue for the workshop under the heading »Mixed-Integer Multicriteria Optimization Problems«. The invitation was issued by Prof. Dr. Stefan Ruzika from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau, Prof. Dr. Oliver Stein from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Küfer from Fraunhofer ITWM. Researchers from universities in Germany and Austria attended. The aim of the conference was to exchange information on the state of the art. Each group had one hour to present current results, followed by a half-hour session for open discussion.

In addition to the working groups of the inviting scientists, the working groups of Prof. Dr. Kathrin Klamroth of the University of Wuppertal, Prof. Dr. Gabriele Eichfelder of the Technical University of Ilmenau, Prof. Dr. Andreas Löhne of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and Prof. Dr. Sophie Parragh of the Johannes Kepler University Linz were represented.

Informal Presentation Promotes Lively Exchange

The conference took place at a »large round table« – without a rigid seating arrangement, which made the exchange between speakers and listeners easier and more lively. During the breaks and at the networking dinner, there was additional space for further discussions in a relaxed atmosphere.

At the end of the conference, the participants not only received the presentation slides, but also a collection of open research questions to take home with them. This already lays the substantive foundation for the next workshop: everyone was so satisfied with the event that this successful format will be continued. In two years, the exchange on »Mixed-Integer Multicriteria Optimization Problems« will continue, also at Fraunhofer ITWM.
