The »Grüne Woche« is the leading international trade fair for food, agriculture and horticulture. Topics include climate protection, resource conservation and sustainable land use. The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) is represented by several co-exhibitors in Hall 23a.
Our expert and head of the department »Image Processing«, Markus Rauhut, is represented at one of these stands and will be presenting our work in the project »KI-WOOD« together with the Thünen Institute.
The Hamburg-based Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forests and Fisheries often acts as an analysis expert for industry and authorities when it comes to identifying timber that has been illegally imported into the EU.
In cooperation with the Thünen Institute of Wood Research in Hamburg, we are developing automatic image recognition systems for the identification of wood species using artificial intelligence.
In 2013, the Federal Republic of Germany pledged to prevent the import and spread of illegal timber species and to implement the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Among other things, this requires a clear identification of the wood species in the various materials and products made from wood. At our booth at the »Grüne Woche«, we will be demonstrating how the wood detectives are tackling this task and what role artificial intelligence (AI) can play in this.
